What is dehumidifier?

A crawl space dehumidifier is a commercial-grade dehumidification unit sized specifically for a crawl space volume and conditions. Unlike a residential dehumidifier (which is built for a basement or living space), a crawl space unit handles the higher humidity loads, drains automatically, and runs on a humidity setpoint rather than a timer.

Why you need it

  • The sealed crawl space still has internal humidity sources (concrete, plumbing leaks, occasional air infiltration); the dehumidifier handles them
  • Maintains humidity below 60% year-round (the threshold where mold growth halts)
  • Sized correctly, runs on a low duty cycle and lasts 8 to 12 years
  • Required by code in any sealed crawl space without continuous exhaust ventilation

Our process

  1. Sizing calculation. Volume of crawl space, current humidity load, climate zone, and existing barrier condition all factor into capacity selection. Undersized units fail. Oversized units short-cycle.
  2. Placement. Mount the unit centrally where airflow can reach all corners. Hang from joists or place on a stable platform.
  3. Drainage. Route the condensate line to a sump basin or exterior drain. Gravity drainage preferred over pump.
  4. Electrical. Dedicated 15 or 20 amp circuit. Most installs require a new circuit pulled from the electrical panel.
  5. Calibration. Set the humidistat to 55%. Verify the unit cycles correctly and drains without backups.

Cost range

$1,800 – $3,500

Includes unit, install labor, drainage, and electrical. Premium units (longer warranty, lower noise) are at the high end of the range.

Dehumidifier questions, answered

What size dehumidifier do I need for my crawl space? +
Most Tennessee crawl spaces between 1,000 and 2,500 square feet need a unit rated 70 to 90 pints per day. Larger crawl spaces or those with active moisture issues need 120 to 130 pints. A contractor sizes this during the inspection.
Can I use a regular home dehumidifier in my crawl space? +
No. Consumer dehumidifiers are not rated for the temperature and humidity extremes of a crawl space environment. They burn out within 12 to 18 months. Commercial crawl space units are built for the conditions and warrant accordingly.
