What is insulation?
In an encapsulated crawl space, insulation moves from where it used to be (fiberglass batts between floor joists) to where it should be (closed-cell foam board on the foundation walls). The change reflects modern building science: in a conditioned crawl space, the building envelope is the foundation wall, not the underside of the floor.
Why you need it
- Permanent thermal barrier that doesn't sag, soak, or harbor pests like fiberglass does
- Reduces seasonal temperature swings in the crawl space
- Improves HVAC efficiency by keeping the crawl space conditioned
- Required by Tennessee energy code for many new constructions and substantial renovations
Our process
- Old fiberglass removal. Pull out all existing fiberglass batts (almost always wet, moldy, or sagging in older Tennessee homes).
- Wall prep. Confirm the vapor barrier is sealed against the foundation wall. Mark stud or anchor locations.
- Foam board cut and fit. Cut 2-inch closed-cell rigid foam panels to fit wall dimensions. Mechanically fasten or adhere.
- Seam and edge sealing. Seal all joints between panels and at the top sill plate with foam sealant.
- Inspection. Verify continuous coverage with no thermal bridges.
Cost range
