What is sump pump?

A crawl space sump pump system catches water that enters the space and removes it before it can pool. The system is a sealed basin set into the floor, a submersible pump, a battery backup pump, and a discharge line that exits the crawl space and routes water at least 10 feet from the foundation. Critical for crawl spaces with periodic water intrusion.

Why you need it

  • Removes water that enters from groundwater seepage, seasonal rain events, or plumbing failures
  • Battery backup ensures the system works during the power outages that often accompany heavy rain
  • Sealed basin design prevents the sump from becoming a humidity source itself
  • Required in conjunction with encapsulation for crawl spaces with documented water history

Our process

  1. Basin placement. Identify the lowest point of the crawl space floor. Excavate and set a sealed sump basin.
  2. Pump installation. Install primary submersible pump rated for the expected water volume.
  3. Battery backup. Install secondary pump with deep-cycle battery, sized for 8 to 12 hours of operation.
  4. Discharge routing. Run rigid discharge pipe out of the crawl space and at least 10 feet from the foundation. Include a check valve and freeze-resistant outlet.
  5. Testing. Flood-test the system to confirm pump engagement, drainage rate, and discharge function.

Cost range

$1,200 – $2,800

Standard sump system with battery backup. French drain integration adds $1,500 to $4,000 if interior or exterior drainage is also installed.

Sump Pump questions, answered

Do I need a sump pump if I encapsulate my crawl space? +
Only if your crawl space has documented water intrusion. Encapsulation handles humidity; it does not handle bulk water. If the crawl space has ever had standing water, a sump system is non-negotiable.
